A real-life Grinch took advantage of an unlocked garage door over the holidays, stealing a purse and laptop in Darien, police said.

On New Year’s Eve, a Fairfield Avenue woman reported that someone had broken into her garage and stole her purse. Police said that the purse was last seen on Christmas Eve inside a 2010 Honda Odyssey, which was parked in the garage and left unlocked.

According to police, the garage bay door was locked, but a rear entrance door was left unlocked. Two days later, on Dec. 26, the woman said she went to the SUV and found that the sliding side door was open and the interior light of the vehicle was on. It was at that point that she first noticed the purse was missing.

Police said that the Darien resident delayed reporting the stolen purse to ensure that the bag had not simply been misplaced. She reported that inside the purse she had several bank and credit cards, $50 in cash and a checkbook. Investigators noted that there were no signs of forced entry into the garage or Honda.

The following day, on Tuesday, Jan. 1, the woman again notified police that she found her husband’s laptop was missing. The laptop was inside the rear sliding door to the home on a desk. That door had also been unlocked.

The burglary remains under investigation. Check back to Daily Voice for updates.
